Panel Discussion – Black Virginians and the Civil War

Black History Month
Join Fredericksburg Hokies for a virtual panel discussion on Black Virginians and the Civil War. This event is hosted by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Dr. Paul Quigley, director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, will explore the rich history of Black Virginians during the Civil War, One-third of the state’s population was African American at that time.
There are stories of refugees who helped drive Lincoln toward emancipation, enslaved people forced to labor for the Confederacy, and Black men in blue uniforms who fought to defeat the Confederacy and end slavery forever.
Dr. Quigley is an associate professor of Civil War studies in the History Department at Virginia Tech.
